AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for May 3, 2013

San Diego’s Red Flag Warning continues today. For all of Southern California the hot and dry weather warning is in effect until 6:00 tonight. At 10:00 AM Mayor Bob Filner and Fire Chief Javier Mainar are talking to the press about being prepared for wild-fire season.

San Diego Unified School District Board of Education is reviewing the punishment given to over 30 high school students for making a video of themselves “twerking”. For my fellow old fogies out there … Twerking is a new and sexual explicit dance.

The students made the video and put it on YouTube. Then someone at Scripps Ranch High School found out and suspended many of the students, forbade some from graduating and going to the prom.

At 10:00 propionates of AB 900 will talk to the press. AB 900 is a California Assembly Bill to exempt “skilled nursing facilities” from Medi-Cal cuts started in 2011.

In court two things of note

First at 8:00 AM the Arraignment of Lance Wright, he is an ex-security guard that is accused of falsely reporting that he got into a gun fight.

Then at 2:00 PM the sentencing for Kevin Kenniston … convicted of posing a police officer and pulling people over.

This afternoon at 2:30 the San Diego Public Library is beginning their Oscar 2012 film series. Today they are showing Argo.

And at 5:00 tonight the 30th annual Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo is starting its three day run. They’ve got all kinds of things going on celebrating Mexican culture in San Diego.

San Diego’s Chicano Park Day

Saturday was Chicano Park Day.

In honor of Chicano Park‘s famous founding thousands of San Diegans spent the day under the Coronado Bridge enjoying the food, music, and art of San Diego’s Chicano community.

The Park was founded in 1970 after neighbors from the surrounding Barrio Logan took over the land under the (then) new bridge and created the park.

On the Chicano Park web site they say…

“Established by Chicano activists on April 22, 1970, Chicano Park has received international recognition as a major public art site for its commanding mural paintings of the past and present struggle of Mexican and Chicano history. This year’s Chicano Park Day anniversary celebration is dedicated to Chicano Park and the Chicano Park Murals having been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Our keynote speaker is Josephine S. Talamantez.”

Many San Diegans are reacting to the new Pope … Both positively and negatively. Many are sharing their criticisms of the Catholic Church on social media. Without getting into the vitriol … one major criticism is the Church’s sex scandals and cover-ups. While others are very happy with the new Pope. At Cathedral Catholic High School’s daily mass there will be 2 priests from Argentina as special guests.
