This time to record Bowler’s Desk Political Podcast Ric Epps and I met up over at Roucco Park.

It’s a nice park with some very cool modernist/minimalist flair. My only criticism is that the park doesn’t have any shade. While the park was named for a local Architect Lloyd Ruocco. The park is designed to honor Ruocco’s minimalist and modernist style.

However it is in desperate need of shade. There are benches that no one sits in unless they want to fry in San Diego’s famous sunshine. Let’s be honest so many parks around San Diego don’t have any shade. That’s bad and seems to be something that many out of town designers forget. While the sun is great we need shade.

OK now that’s off my chest.

For the podcast Ric and I talked about:

How Mayor Filner faced his third veto override in a row.

The Tourism Marketing District.

San Diego County is warning outdoors people to stay away from squirrels because they could have the plague.

Three captured squirrels tested positive for the disease and fleas on the little animals spread the infamous disease.

According to San Diego County’s Department of Environmental Health (DEH) Director Jack Miller

“The big thing is to avoid contact with squirrels and the fleas they carry … If you’re camping, set your tents up away from squirrel burrows. If you’re hiking, don’t feed squirrels and don’t let your kids play with them”.

The DEH say to:

• Avoid contact with ground squirrels, chipmunks, and other wild animals.
• Do not feed, touch or handle wild animals.
• Do not rest, camp or sleep near animal burrows in the ground.
• Protect pets by keeping them on a leash, use flea control, or best of all, leave pets at home.
• Contact your doctor immediately if you become ill within one week of visiting a known plague area.
• Symptoms include a sudden onset of fever, chills and tender swollen lymph nodes.
• Do not touch sick or dead animals.

They also warns people to keep their pets from touching or playing with the rodents. They say to keep you pets on leashes and to use flea control like Advantage.

Contact a doctor immediately if you think you are infected. Symptoms include tender and swollen lymph nodes, chills, and fever.

Southern California Edison is closing the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

Southern California Edison announces they are “retiring” the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in a press release posted on the company website.

Chairman and COE Ted Craver says “SONGS has served this region for over 40 years … but we have concluded that the continuing uncertainty about when or if SONGS might return to service was not good for our customers, our investors, or the need to plan for our region’s long-term electricity needs.”

Reactors 2 and 3 have been shut down since January 2012. Reactor 2 was taken off line for routine maintenance and reactor 3 was shut when a steam generator malfunctioned.
