AM Briefing from Bowlersdesk.com for February 21, 2013

Two Sheriff’s Deputies are shot and a suspect is dead after a 10-hour stand-off. It all started yesterday when a woman called for help with her 22-year-old son. The mother told authorities that she just told her son that she had a restraining order against him … he became angry and took off in her car. The adult son then returned to the mother’s house and deputies tried to talk to him unsuccessfully … the Deputies then tear gassed him and he returned fire … shooting two of the Deputies. The Deputies then got out of the house, leaving the suspect inside, and called for backup.

That’s when the standoff began.

Neighbors were evacuated; the SWAT team came out along with Crisis Negotiators. After many hours of unsuccessful attempts to get the suspect out of the house a robot was sent inside and that’s when they found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. One of two injured Deputies has already been released from the hospital the other is still recovering.

And in much lighter news ….

The third annual adult spelling bee is happening tonight at 6. Individuals and company teams will compete in the San Diego Council on Literacy’s contest and proceeds from the event support literacy programs around San Diego.

Farmer: Proposed Buddhist Center could destroy avocado grove

It’s not often the words “Buddhist” and “land use controversy” are used in the same sentence. Today San Diego’s Board of Supervisors will do just that.

San Diego’s Board of Supervisors takes up Buddhist controversy. The Buddhists at the Dai Dang Meditation Center want to expand and build a 2-story, 8,900-square-foot residence, a 7,600-square-foot meditation hall and a 6,200-square-foot worship hall.

But avocado farmers oppose the expansion saying that the larger center could hurt the growth of their fruit.

I am hearing that upwards of 100 Buddhist monks could be at the meeting.

San Diego Sheriff’s Department Exaggerates Theft Impact

San Diego’s Sheriff Department greatly exaggerated impact of Internet outage.

They said …

“Between the hours of 12:00 a.m., and 1:00 a.m., Wade Strautman, who works for Century Link Fibertron, received notification that 10 million broadband lines are down. These lines include those that carry information to the Department of Defense. As of this moment we are aware the Alpine Sheriff’s Station has been affected and we can assume that the Pine Valley Sheriff’s Station is also affected. Units from the Alpine Station are checking an area. A “cut” has been discovered on Alpine Blvd., in the vicinity of Peutz Valley. It appears that 75 feet of fiber optic cable was taken along with 6 feet of 600 strand copper cable. There are Tech’s on scene trying to repair the damage at this time. All customers have been notified by Century Link Fibertron of the damage. Additionally, we are being told that it will take approximately seventeen hours to repair. This fiber optic cable is the backbone that runs Century Link Fibertron’s nationwide network, including Miramar and 32nd street Naval Base”

While it is true that the cables were stolen and some Internet users were affected, it is untrue that millions of lines and the Department of Defense were affected.

According to a Century Link spokesperson the some AT&T customers lost service maybe thousands.

The Navy says that they did not experience any problems.

Matt Hygh a 19-year-old college student has gone missing in San Diego County’s back country and it is believed he is attempting to live out a fantasy based on the book and Sean Penn movie “Into the Wild”.

Matt was last seen in his car near the Palm desert in Indio CA at around 11 pm.

In a statement his parents say …

“We can only guess he is going off the grid. We don’t know what caused this action but he has talked to friends in the past of living out the book “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer, a nonfiction account of Christopher McCandless, who divorces himself from his friends, family, and possessions in search of a greater spiritual knowledge and communion with nature.”

Civil Rights for Whales … Arguments Today

Today at 10:30 am Lawyers from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will argue that Orcas have civil rights. PETA believes that SeaWorld is violating the Killer Whales rights specifically the 13th Amendment.

The 13th Amendment officially outlaws slavery. The lawyers will argue that the whales (Tilikum, Katina, Kasatka, Ulises, and Corky) are slaves being forced to “work” for SeaWorld.

“Nothing in the 13th Amendment excludes these extremely social, sentient, and intelligent beings from its protections, and SeaWorld’s treatment of these five orcas absolutely defines slavery,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “The five plaintiffs were violently seized from their ocean homes and families to serve their ‘masters’ and are being made to do cheap tricks during an entire lifetime of privation.”

While the hearing is open to the public cameras are not allowed.
