This morning at 8 AM immigration advocates are holding a breakfast panel and talking about how to reform immigration.

At 9 AM University of California at San Diego medical students will find out where they will spend their residencies… it’s called Match Day.

And in other medical news UnitedHealthcare will present a $505,000 check to Family Health Centers of San Diego

Then at 9:30 on base at Camp Pendleton the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and Color Guard will perform

Also this weekend will be this first annual Epic Beer Festival at the San Diego Convention Center … there will be more than 200 beers to sample

And finally today a 32-year-old man is going to be officially adopted by his foster family after nearly 20-years. Maurice Griffin was abandoned by his birth mother when he was three and taken in by his foster parents Charles and Lisa Harris where he lived until he was 14. Fox 5 San Diego reported about how Griffin was tardily removed from their care and how many years later they reunited. Today at 2 PM in San Diego’s Juvenile Court Griffin will legally become their son.

Many San Diegans are reacting to the new Pope … Both positively and negatively. Many are sharing their criticisms of the Catholic Church on social media. Without getting into the vitriol … one major criticism is the Church’s sex scandals and cover-ups. While others are very happy with the new Pope. At Cathedral Catholic High School’s daily mass there will be 2 priests from Argentina as special guests.

Today a local Marine will be posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Sergeant Wade D. Wilson is being honored for making the ultimate sacrifice during a firefight in Afghanistan’s Helmand Provence on May 11th 2012. At 10 AM Wilson’s mother will accept the Silver Star on his behalf.

There are two anti-sequestration rallies today. The first is going to be by low-income senior citizens at 10:45 at the Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center on Fourth Ave. The second will be by the National Treasury Employees Union and will be at the San Diego Federal Building from 11:30 to 12:30.

Congressman renews efforts for Medal of Honor for fallen Marine

SAN DIEGO -- Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) is renewing his efforts to have the Medal of Honor awarded to a Marine from San Diego killed in combat in Iraq.

In 2008, then-Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates ruled the actions of Sgt. Rafael Peralta did not merit the nation's highest award for bravery. Last December, Gates' successor, Leon E. Panetta, declined to overrule the decision, although he noted Peralta's courage and faithful service.

Congressman renews efforts for Medal of Honor for fallen Marine

Some of San Diego’s most important Democratic politicians will urge President Obama to stop the sequester today. Congressmen Scott Peters, Congressmen Juan Vargas, Mayor Bob Filner, and Councilmember David Alvarez are talking to the media at 8:30 this morning along with Derry Pence President of the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association. They are worried about how the sequester will affect San Diego maritime industry. Congressman Peters has been making the rounds talking about the sequester and how he thinks it will affect San Diego.

Today the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will salute the Tuskegee Airmen with a colors ceremony. A colors ceremony is when service members present the nation’s flag, this ceremony will be in honor of the nearly 1000 African-American pilots that broke race barriers and trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field.

San Diego has another feather in its cap. Trip advisor dot come named La Jolla Cove one of the country’s best beaches. The cove came in at number eight. The number one Trip Advisor beach in the world is … Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa Italy.

This morning at around 3 am border patrol caught a panga boat loaded with contraband in the Northern San Diego County Ponto Beach. From the video submitted the boat appears to be loaded down with large bales of what is presumed to be drugs. Both Coast Guard and Border Patrol are searching for possible passengers.

The 34-year-old Riverside Police officer killed in an ambush attack allegedly by Christopher Dorner has San Diego ties. Michael Crain left college after a year to join the Marine Corps and was stationed at San Diego’s Camp Pendleton. While in the Corps Crain was deployed twice to Kuwait and taught Military Operations in Urban Terrain. Crain was honorably discharged and joined the Riverside police department in 2001. His funeral will be at 10:30 AM tomorrow morning at the Grove Community Church in Riverside. He is survived by his two children

Tonight at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hear from Southern California Edison executives about re-starting the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. Unit two at the reactor was shut down for routine maintenance when a small leak found in Unit 3. Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Edward Markey have both expressed serious concerns about restarting the reactor and they even allege that plant managers knew about the problems. The Commission is meeting in San Juan Capistrano at 6 PM and will be streamed live at http://www.video.nrc.gov .

And tonight San Diego celebrates Mardi Gras in downtown’s famous Gas Lamp Quarter. About 10,000 people will fill the Gas Lamp for its 19th annual Mardi Gras.

No word on how many of the revelers will make it to Ash Wednesday Mass.

Bucket falls from aircraft, damages business

SAN DIEGO – A five-gallon bucket dropped from a military aircraft and damaged a Miramar business and vehicle below, military officials said Thursday.

The bucket crashed through the roof of the auto repair shop on the 6300 block of Marindustry Drive Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

No one was injured, although a vehicle inside the repair shop had damage to it’s bumper, said 1st Lt.

SAN DIEGO -- A recruit from the Marine Corp Recruit Depot was arrested at San Diego Lindbergh Field early Thursday after he ran across the runway, authorities said.

Air traffic controlers saw the man cross the tarmac and run toward Gate 6 in Terminal 1 around 6:20 a.m. They alerted San Diego harbor police, saying the man appeared to be trying to hide in a service vehicle.

Over the next four days the Marines at Camp Pendleton are conducting a series of live fire exercises called Steel Knight. For San Diego it begins with an invasion of the beach at Camp Pendleton. Steel Knight is an annual series of division wide combat exercises that have taken place since the nineteen nineties.

This afternoon Jason Mullaney, a former Navy SEAL, will be arraigned for stealing more than a million dollars from fellow Navy SEAL’s. Mullaney will be accused of coning SEALs and others into investing in his money lending business then transferring the money into his personal accounts.

Potentially he is facing multiple decades in prison

Today there are two Fiscal Cliff protests that will happen in the late afternoon.

The first will be at four P-M at the Vista offices of Congressmen Darrel Issa. Members from the California Nurses Association are going to protest reduction in Medicare and Medicaid because of the fiscal cliff negotiation.

The Second at five thirty P-M at the San Diego offices of Senator Dianne Feinstein. At this one organized labor will share its anger at the proposed cuts to entitlements and demand tax hikes on the wealthy.

Marines identified in helicopter mishap

The 7 marines killed in a helicopter collision have been identified.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. (February 24, 2012) – Two helicopters belonging to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing collided along the California/Arizona border killing seven Marines Wednesday, February 22 around 8:00 p.m.

The following six Marines were assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and based at Camp Pendleton.

Maj. Thomas A. Budrejko, 37, of Montville, Conn., commissioned in the Marine Corps May 24, 1996 and served as an AH-1W Cobra pilot and Executive Officer of HMLA-469.

Budrejko served three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and one deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010.

His personal awards include Air Medal Individual Action with Combat “V” (gold numeral 2), Air Medal Strike/Flight (numeral 9), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat „V‟ (fourth award), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Capt. Michael M. Quin, 28, of Purcellville, Va., commissioned in the Marine Corps May 26, 2006 and served as a UH-1Y Huey pilot.
Quin‟s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award), National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Capt. Benjamin N. Cerniglia, 31, of Montgomery, Ala., commissioned in the Marine Corps December 14, 2007 and served as an AH-1W Cobra pilot.
Cerniglia‟s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (second award), National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Sgt. Justin A. Everett, 33, of Clovis, Calif., enlisted in the Marine Corps February 19, 2002 and served as a helicopter crew chief aboard UH-1Y Hueys.

Everett deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005.

His personal awards include the Air Medal Strike/Flight, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award), Good Conduct Medal (second award), National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Korean Defense Service Medal.

Lance Cpl. Corey A. Little, 25, of Marietta, Ga., enlisted in the Marine Corps March 30, 2009 and served as a helicopter crew chief aboard UH-1Y Hueys.

His personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Lance Cpl. Nickoulas H. Elliott, 21, of Spokane, Wash., enlisted in the Marine Corps May 4, 2009 and served as a helicopter crew chief aboard UH-1Y Hueys.

His personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The following Marine was assigned to Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz.

Capt. Nathan W. Anderson, 32, of Amarillo, Texas, commissioned in the Marine Corps December 20, 2002 and served as a UH-1Y Huey pilot.
Anderson served three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

His personal awards include the Air Medal Individual Action, Air Medal Strike/Flight (numeral 2), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

“Every single one of these Marines impacted our squadron in their own special way and the entire Marine Corps aviation community is feeling their tragic loss. During this difficult time, I ask that you pray for the families and friends of the warriors we have lost.” said Lt. Col. Stephen Lightfoot, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 commanding officer.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and loved ones of the Marines involved in this tragic accident,” said Col. Bradford Gering, commanding officer, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One. “We will do everything in our power to support all those affected and honor their memories.”

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
